Stage-Gate®: Implementing a Best Practice Process
A high quality Stage-Gate process is the major performance driver
"High quality" are the key words here. Just having a formal, documented process has no positive impact at all. You must build certain best practices into your Stage-Gate process. So be sure you know what these best practices are and how to integrate them into your process.
Unique superior products are
successful 98% of the time
The single most important best practice and success factor is having a unique, superior product that delivers unique benefits in the eyes of the customer. But “me-too” imitated products seem to be the rule rather than the exception. So Which best practices have you built into your development process so every project delivers a unique superior product?

Other best practices
Product uniqueness is just one example. Fourteen other success factors or best practices are also strongly correlated with new-product performance.
Read more about them in our articles “Uncovering the Best Practices in Product Development” and ”Stage-Gate® Process for New Product Success”.

Implementing Stage-Gate® in your company
An effective development process must be based on the success factors (see above)
and on the unique conditions at the company that shall use the process. One single individual rarely possess sufficient knowledge of these factors. Therefore, many companies assign a cross-functional task group headed by an internal project manager.
Furthermore, an external Stage-Gate® expert can be part of the group. Most companies lack experience in designing Stage-Gate® processes. An experienced consultant can speed up the process considerably by providing experience and examples of solutions from other companies.
The design work and implementation are often divided into three steps (see figure). The results from each step are assessed and approved by the company’s management before continuing to the next step.
It is also important to involve the future users of Stage-Gate® in the process in order to get their approval and ownership of the final result. Even a perfect process will come to nothing if it is not accepted by the users.
